About the Project

Youverify before now was offering its Customer verification services to Banks and Businesses in Nigeria. Our B2B customers access our services using the Youverify Operating system and this enables them to hire talents, onboard customers and carry out employee background checks.

As we aimed to expand our reach beyond Nigeria, we designed customer verification solutions tailored to the unique requirements, regulations and policies of each country we would be expanding to.

My role in this project was to design the verification flow for the new market, redesign the existing platform to accommodate new users, and design the dashboards, data visualization and verification reports.

Business Opportunity

“Expanding our product offerings to Kenya aligns perfectly with our vision to drive financial innovation on a global scale. As we bring our cutting-edge technology and expertise to the Kenyan market, we aim to revolutionise the way businesses approach compliance,”

- CEO of Youverify, Gbenga Odegbami on the launch of customer verification service in Kenya.

Gathering Insights from Market Research

My primary focus was on translating market insights and user needs into a well-designed solution. User in this case refers to businesses in these countries. While I wasn't directly involved in the market research process, I collaborated closely with our Product Manager and Head of Sales in the respective regions to understand the unique challenges, cultural contexts, and user expectations.

I learnt from these insights that one of the major needs of these businesses was the ability to easily make verification requests and record all verification results being returned. This wasn’t different from some of the goals of our Nigerian customers but it gave me an extra nudge to design the platform to be more intuitive for all the users.

Discovery process

On the journey to building for these new markets, the major question that was raised among the team was how do we redesign the user interface which was originally designed for our Nigerian customers to now accommodate and include businesses in these countries we were expanding to?

We had a lot of brainstorming sessions with the PMs, designers and Engineers and we mapped out user flows on Miro to enable us to have a clearer understanding of what this would look it.

One of the solutions we implemented was adding a country selector, positioned at a very prominent place on the identity verification request page and this allowed businesses to select the countries they wanted to perform verification for. For example, a business in Ghana can select Ghana from the country selector and the request page refreshes and gives a list of all the verification services we offer in Ghana.

Collaborating with Engineers

To design the user interface, I worked closely with the engineering team. They provided comprehensive API documentation for identity verification services in each country, outlining available endpoints, request parameters, and response formats. This information guided my design decisions, helping me to align my designs with the capabilities and limitations of the API allowing me and the Engineers to work faster and effectively together. For example, when designing the verification request form, I won’t add an input field for date of birth if that is not part of the request parameters. This enabled me to collaborate easily and effortlessly with the Engineers on the team. Designing with compliance to these regulations enabled us to provide a secure and trustworthy experience for our customers.

In designing the verification report, the API responses provided us with a lot of data fields. And we had to display only the necessary information in a structured and visually appealing layout. This was a challenge for us, figuring out how best to present this report in a way that wasn’t overloading the users visually but with numerous iterations and testing, we were able to figure it out.

For example, if the request returned 6 phone numbers, instead of displaying all 6 at once, we displayed 3 first and hid the rest behind a ‘View More’ button. And a ‘View Less’ button to do as the name implies.

Designing for our new customers also allowed us to improve the existing UI and solve usability issues discovered as we studied the existing user flows.

Impact

We have successfully launched our services in South Africa, Kenya and Ghana.

During a pilot test in Kenya, we successfully gained 2 clients. Additionally, there are 50 other potential clients in the process of becoming customers, indicating strong interest in our services.

Key Takeaway

Working on this project made me deeply understand the value and importance of designing to meet business needs. We did take into account all the pain points of our customers, potential customers, and users, but the driving force of this project was business growth and impact.
